Neptune’s Grotto – A fairytale cavern!<\/h2>\n

The grotto is a series of rooms with lakes of saltwater that extends to approximately 2,500 metres in length.<\/span>\u00a0The grotto, a geological marvel that is one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful natural gems, attracts more than 150,000 tourists per year.<\/span>\u00a0The grotto is easily accessible via the daily “Linea Grotte”<\/strong> boat line that leaves the port or by foot using the “Escala Del Cabirol”<\/strong>, a set 660<\/strong> stairs cut into the side of the cliff.<\/span><\/p>\n

The majesty and beauty of the scenery is characterized by stalagmites, stalactites and crystals in various shapes and sizes.<\/span>\u00a0It begins in the large room that holds the clear waters of Lago Lamarmora<\/strong>, one of Europe’s largest saltwater lakes.<\/span>\u00a0Acquasantiera<\/strong> (“The Baptismal Font”), an approximately 2-meter-high stalagmite, is located here. <\/span><\/p>\n

At its peak, vats have been formed where rainwater is collected, creating a valuable drinking fountain for the birds that nest in Capo Caccia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Look out for the Sala delle Rovine<\/strong> (‘Room of Ruins,’), and the Majestic Reggia<\/strong>. This is the area of the grotto that has the greatest impact.<\/span>\u00a0In this large room you will find impressive columns that almost support the ceiling.<\/span><\/p>\n
