What is Gaelic football?
If you’re travelling with somebody who has never seen a match before, Gaelic football can initially look like a mixture of football, rugby and basketball – although it is very much a sport in its own right.
Gaelic football is one of Ireland’s traditional Gaelic games and is played between two teams of 15 players on a large grass pitch.
Players can kick the ball, catch it and carry it in their hands. When running with the ball, players must regularly bounce it or perform a “solo”, dropping the ball onto the foot and kicking it back into the hands.
Teams can score in two main ways:
- A goal – putting the ball into the net beneath the crossbar, worth three points.
- A point – kicking the ball over the crossbar and between the uprights.
Modern Gaelic football also includes a two-point score for certain successful long-range kicks from outside the 40-metre arc.
The result is an extremely fast-moving sport, with possession able to switch from one end of the pitch to the other in seconds.
