Neptune’s Grotto – A fairytale cavern!

The grotto is a series of rooms with lakes of saltwater that extends to approximately 2,500 metres in length. The grotto, a geological marvel that is one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful natural gems, attracts more than 150,000 tourists per year. The grotto is easily accessible via the daily “Linea Grotte” boat line that leaves the port or by foot using the “Escala Del Cabirol”, a set 660 stairs cut into the side of the cliff.

The majesty and beauty of the scenery is characterized by stalagmites, stalactites and crystals in various shapes and sizes. It begins in the large room that holds the clear waters of Lago Lamarmora, one of Europe’s largest saltwater lakes. Acquasantiera (“The Baptismal Font”), an approximately 2-meter-high stalagmite, is located here.

At its peak, vats have been formed where rainwater is collected, creating a valuable drinking fountain for the birds that nest in Capo Caccia.

Look out for the Sala delle Rovine (‘Room of Ruins,’), and the Majestic Reggia. This is the area of the grotto that has the greatest impact. In this large room you will find impressive columns that almost support the ceiling.
