At the western bit of the Sardinia island in Italy, the city of Alghero is fantastic place to visit. Known for its red coral crafts and for its jaw-dropping landscapes, this is a wonderful town to spend your vacation. However, although the Mediterranean has quite a nice weather and it’s sunny and dry for most of the time, the climate in Alghero can be quite rainy sometimes. For the rainy days in Alghero, we have composed a list with the top eight places to visit and things to do in Alghero when it’s raining. Read on so that you will be prepared for your Sardinia vacation!

Azienda Agricola – Leda’ d’Ittiri

With 5 stars on Trip Advisor, this little artisanal wine cellar has plenty of wine tasting for you to do. If you don’t appreciate wine that much, there are also many other regional products you can try at the Azienda Agricola-Leda’ d’Ittiri, like olive oil and cheese. They also offer a sunset walking tour which we recommend, but if it’s raining, you can always stay inside and try anything from a large assortment of Sardinia food products and snacks that will keep you occupied for quite a bit. You’ll leave with a full stomach and a brand new idea about Sardinian food altogether.

Chiesa di San – Francesco

Located in the Via Carlo Alberto in Alghero, the Chiesa di San-Francesco is a nice gothic monument. With its mixture of Catalan and Gothic architecture, this church is a nice place to stop by when it’s raining and it has amazing sights to offer. Even if not for a rainy day, we’d always recommend visiting this church if Alghero is in your travel plans. The cloister is beautiful and offers quite a nice backdrop for your vacation pictures if you can’t be in the sea or at the beach. This church is quite unique and it shows the Catalan influence in Sardinia that still can be noticed even in its language – the Catalan idiom is recognised as an official language in this region by the Italian government.

Bowling Alghero

If you’re looking for something different than wine-tasting or church visiting, maybe you could pay a visit to the Bowling Alghero on a rainy day. With five stars on Trip Advisor, it seems like this bowling alley is a favourite among visitors of the Alghero city. This might be a good tip especially if you have children: it’s a great way to keep them busy on rainy days in Alghero. Adults will also love it, being quite large, clean and having nice music to cheer you up on a not so bright day. It is also not expensive, which is also a plus when you’re on vacation: you get to spend a morning and an afternoon indoors that will still be so fun, you won’t even notice time going by. And, if you get hungry or thirsty while bowling, you can always check our next tip!

Imbibe – Drink Therapy

Another place in Alghero that has earned a five-star rating from its visitors on Trip Advisor, Imbibe is a great bar to stop by that offers both drinks and light snacks that can serve as lunch for your travel group. Its cocktails are amazing, with a large offer of different drinks for every taste. The beer is fantastic as well, offering several foreign and national brands. The prices are also quite reasonable, and their mojito is to die for. The atmosphere is lovely in any given day, with the brick walls giving it a medieval look that will make you feel like you’re inside a castle – except you’ll probably be trying out one of their gin and tonic combinations. The staff is nice and welcoming, with excellent customer service being one of their trademarks, so be sure to pay Imbibe a visit whenever you go to Alghero.

Cattedrale di Santa – Maria

If a little church like Chiesa di San-Francesco seems underwhelming for you, maybe you’d like to pay a visit to Cattedrale di Santa-Maria – an ancient cathedral with a steeple that towers over the sea which can be visited, giving you a lovely sea view. Other than the amazing architecture that this cathedral offers, you’ll also be entertained by its lovely works of religious art that can be seen all over the place at the Cattedrale di Santa-Maria. If you are an art lover, this is a place you cannot forget to visit in your days in Alghero. The cathedral is quite large and also provides guided tours, which can make your visit a lot more interesting knowing the history behind this fascinating place.

Museo Diocesano d’Arte – Sacra

If museums are your thing, you cannot miss the Museo Diocesano d’Arte-Sacra at the Piazza Duomo in Alghero. For religious art experts and lovers, this is a place you cannot miss, with lovely works of art from various Italian artists coming from different artistic movements. You can also see a few religious garments that have been used by the bishops and priests in the many churches of Alghero. This city carries a heavy legacy within, and it’s quite interesting to see it unfold in the Museo. However, inform yourself of the closing days before planning your visit, as the Museum tends to close quite a few times during the year.

The Coral Museum

Again on the topic of Alghero museums, you can’t miss The Coral Museum in this town. Red coral can be found in quite a large amount around the Alghero coast, which has made it quite common for artists to use it as their raw material for a large amount of different art pieces. It is not something you can see in other Mediterranean cities as easily, so we highly recommend that you pay a visit to this museum if you’re in Alghero and find yourself unable to enjoy the beach because of a rainy day. You’ll find everything, from statues made of coral to chess sets using the same raw material. We can assure you that you’ll be impressed at its craftsmanship!

Chiesa di San – Michele

For our last tip, we picked another church: there are so many in Alghero and their architecture is so impressing that almost every single one is worth a visit. The exterior might not be very impressive apart from its multicoloured dome that can be seen from all over the city; however, on the inside you’ll find large, fascinating rooms filled with religious statues and works of art that make this church a must see for every tourist in Alghero. Reconstructed in the 17th century, this church is full of marble carvings that will make you stand in awe at every turn. Plus, its dome makes for a wonderful setting for taking pictures, with its coloured glass creating an inspiring ambiance.
